4 Great Tips to Improve Your Portrait Photography

If you’ve been looking for some advice to help you improve your portrait photography, then this is the article for you. We’ll look at perspective, eye contact, composition and finally getting your subject out of their comfort zone. By the end you’ll have the knowledge to go out there and add the wow factor to your portraits.

First, let’s look at perspective. Most portraits are taken from eye level, but by altering it to below, above or even at floor level, your subject will come to life in a way that is certain to create interest.

Next, let’s look at eye contact. The direction of the subject’s eyes can change the image drastically. Most portraits have the subject looking down the lens, but having them look off camera or into space can create intriguing results. We as the viewers wonder what it is off camera that is making them laugh or smile, the key is to take an image of the subject that is just as interesting.

Now, let’s look at composition. Experiment with composition to have your subject in one of the thirds. Either side or dead center will certainly produce interesting results in your portraits.

Finally, let’s look at getting your subject out of their comfort zone. If the subject is a business person, for example, having them reveal a lighter, fun side  can create a great portrait. An example of this would be having the person move or jump in the photo, which will produce a more interesting than normal corporate portrait.

So there you have it, 4 great tips to help you improve your portrait photography. We’ve looked at perspective, eye contact, composition and finally getting your subject out of their comfort zone. By experimenting with these 4 areas, you are bound to create some interesting and unusual images, so try some today.

Group Photography the Flavour of the Cold Cold Month

Here are a few Snaps I took of the award recipients from the Department of Energy Resources and Tourism,

the stairs of the NCCC are always a nice spot for a group shot or two and a mini ham and cheese croissant or three after the shoot (by permission of course) was also rather nice,

Nationwide travel to service the industry has been part of our reputation building and now with a solid return client base we can confidently say there is no job too big or small for us to handle.

To become a leading Canberra based Photographers firm was the first mountain to climb and now endeavouring to branch further and further afield (never forgetting our roots) is our primary goal—–

We Utilise the finest Camera and Post editing equipment on the market and back every job with the guarantee that we will work internally with our clients to deliver the highest levels of professional service and ensure that not only are expectations met- but creatively and intuitively they are gone beyond to deliver an amazing end product—- If image is everything which it is, then why would you leave your project in the hands of inferior operators?

Canberra Wedding Photography by appointment only

Hi there,

I don’t shoot a lot of weddings anymore but am always keen when the bride and groom were as great and easy to work with as these guys—- they had a true connection and they would do this thing where they sort of fell into each other (speaking slightly esoterically) was beautiful to watch . For me Wedding photography is shot either emotionally or as high fashion—– It is generally a highly emotional experience so I try and capture the moments between moments wherein lies the true meaning and essence of the day…. have a look at the link below to see some of their shots.
