4 Great Tips to Improve Your Portrait Photography

If you’ve been looking for some advice to help you improve your portrait photography, then this is the article for you. We’ll look at perspective, eye contact, composition and finally getting your subject out of their comfort zone. By the end you’ll have the knowledge to go out there and add the wow factor to your portraits.

First, let’s look at perspective. Most portraits are taken from eye level, but by altering it to below, above or even at floor level, your subject will come to life in a way that is certain to create interest.

Next, let’s look at eye contact. The direction of the subject’s eyes can change the image drastically. Most portraits have the subject looking down the lens, but having them look off camera or into space can create intriguing results. We as the viewers wonder what it is off camera that is making them laugh or smile, the key is to take an image of the subject that is just as interesting.

Now, let’s look at composition. Experiment with composition to have your subject in one of the thirds. Either side or dead center will certainly produce interesting results in your portraits.

Finally, let’s look at getting your subject out of their comfort zone. If the subject is a business person, for example, having them reveal a lighter, fun side  can create a great portrait. An example of this would be having the person move or jump in the photo, which will produce a more interesting than normal corporate portrait.

So there you have it, 4 great tips to help you improve your portrait photography. We’ve looked at perspective, eye contact, composition and finally getting your subject out of their comfort zone. By experimenting with these 4 areas, you are bound to create some interesting and unusual images, so try some today.

SOme info For aspiring Portrait Photographers in Canberra and World… wide :)

A Really good trick to capturing your subject in a beautiful portrait is to get on to the same level as them or “connect” with them as an individual.

This is especially important when working with children’s portraiture,
Take the time to talk with the kids involved and see what they are in to,
Say, what TV show is their favourite?
Or who is their best friend, what their name is and what makes them feel happy in their young lives.
To always be observant of your subject is a really strong angle when making imagery as it is often (and I have been quoted as saying) “it is the moment’s between moment’s that make for a great session.” This is also apparent in Wedding Photography.
Take time with the family and try not to rush through the capture of your content as this will only get people off side and expression wise detracts from what you need to create— stunning natural imagery.
Canberra is no different from any where in Australia or the rest of the world and I believe kids are just kids so if Mum and Dad are paying you well to make terrific shots then make sure you get the content before leaving site.
Site is a key word here as a lot of my portraits are made on site, close to or in the comfort of their own homes; people definitely relax a lot more when there is that homely element for them to be photographed in.
And that being said if you are doing studio portraiture at your workplace/studio, try and add to the vibe and feel of the shoot an element of comfort and relaxation where your people can just move around and feel comfort and at ease with the camera.
Not everyone has had experience in front of the camera and to be honest it is probably about (in my experience) only 10 to 20% of people that actually like their picture being taken,
That is why it is so important to make it a fun endeavour and not a chore or cumbersome.
I have been photographing family portraits in Canberra and surrounds for about 11 years and always feel that if you can achieve (to state again) a relaxed environment all the while still giving some direction when things go a little flat as they sometimes can—- then a fabulous shoot that will be remembered for what it was will be achieved as well as the most important thing occurs, amazing imagery is made,

Portrait Photography Stage 2 Making it Happen in Canberra Australia
By Chris Canham
There is a fair bit of Q and A that with the right info garnered from the client can save you time energy and stop the chance of a poor outcome when making Portraiture.
A series of questions relating to the specifics of the shoot will unearth and give you the answers that will not only give you peace of mind and understanding as to what your client wants which in turn gives you all the more options to keep the client happy as this is the real goal in any service industry
Some questions you might want to run past your client.
How many people to be photographed are there?
Did you want to steer towards any specific theme ie classic, fun, eccentric etc
Do you prefer Studio or potentially outdoors somewhere on location?
What are you after as an end result?

You could also talk about colour schemes etc for clothing— I Always try and get my clients to dress in blocky colours rather than stripes and spots which can be contrasting and make the imagery not as strong.
When photographing Babies specifically you will need to ask questions like “age”? and can the baby hold it’s head up?
And then offer or suggest that the parents bring with them some toys that they can use to get the baby smiling and giggling.
Small Children can be tricky ages 2 – 6 or 8 years as they often have their minds made up as to what they want or how willing they will be to work with the photographer- I have found that since having my own child – child Portraiture in this age category becomes a lot easier as you understand a bit more about children’s psyche and keeping it fun through the imagery capture will give you the best results to get lots of smiles and great results,
Anyhow I Will go further on these topics in portraiture article 3 as to finalise the ways to of Portraiture and how I think it is Best approached in Canberra and Australia.
